Respect and Praise for Colton Harris-Moore

Attorney John Brown said he spoke with Harris-Moore for four hours on Saturday and found him to be "fascinating, intelligent and introspective."

He wanted me to give the message to the public that what he did was not romantic, that he shouldn't be a role model and he actually doesn't like the attention he is getting. - Brown

Over the past few days, much has turned up in the news relating to the subject of Colton being regarded as a 'Folk Hero' much to his own comments. In the quote given above from Colton’s attorney and many like it, we are seeing a different Colton than many people were probably expecting. From what it seems like, is that Colton himself would like for the image that the media and his fans have created to be done away with. As a fan, I think that Colton deserves our respect and way we may want to rethink the way that Colton receives the medias attention. One idea is to address the issue of Colton as a 'role model.' Colton’s did something that many kids dream of doing. Hijacking planes, boats, mansions etc. the life sounds exciting and thrilling. In reality, Colton was experiencing a much deeper psychological tension and the acts he did were irresponsible and without saying should not be repeated.

For any of the kids out there who think this is fun, it is not, He was scared to death most of the time he was on his lark, and he's concerned that kids will think this is fun. - Brown

With this in mind, what Colton did also took a lot of bravery and he deserves our credit for the intelligence that it took to learn how to fly planes without a license in addition to evading police while traveling from the Pacific Northwest to the Bahamas. Let us not be naive of the mentality that Colton was experiencing while he was on his 'lark,' but I think he still deserves our praises for his bravery.

Colton arrives back in Washington after a two year crime spree that started in this very state following his arrest in the Bahamas.

Bahamayhem

Colton Harris soaking up the rays in the Bahamas. It appears that our teen hero is changing his climate has headed for a destination of envy in his usual island hopping self. Looking back at the past few months, Colton has managed to hide from the media, but this joyride has taken his fame to new levels and is reinforcing his image as "The Young Outlaw."





The Abaco Islands lie in the northern Bahamas and comprise the main islands of Great Abaco and Little Abaco with smaller islands surrounding the two. For the time being, Home to Colton, the Abaco used to be home to English Loyalists who fled America during the American Revolution and in the 1970's became the envy of American Businessmen who wanted the Islands to become a Utopia for Businessmen fearing socialism. It is also Regatta Time In Abaco and this begs the speculation that Colton has become tired of flying and would prefer to take up sailing.




For now we can only wait to see what happens next but this act was not a disappointment.

An open letter to the residents of Camano Island

Dear Residents of Camano Island,

As a so called "fan" of Colton Harris-Moore, I want to first express my deepest sympathy for the anguish that he has put you through. I was listening to the radio today and heard one of the locals on the island discuss the heightened security your community has faced since the increase in theft and crime committed by Colton, and believe that your voice needs to be heard.

As a respectful citizen of the United States, I understand how any kind of threat to a community can cause change in ways that are not always beneficial. The resident commented that due to the threat, many residents are being more cautious with their valuables and that some members of the community are purchasing weapons in order to protect their property. However, as i lament the plight your community is in, I recognize the un-tamable nature of Colton as a dieing trait in our culture.

I am a fan of Colton for many reasons. Anywhere from the tenacity he has to teach himself how to fly a Cessna, although mistakenly forgetting that landing such vehicle requires serious training; to his willingness to overlook the multiple threats he faces and commit to daring need I say extremely dangerous acts and actually succeeding in them. I dare to say that many of the people who have become fans have done so because they understand the same societal 'restrictions' that he is confronting or even escaping.

There is a longing in everybody to experience this sort of empowering and I think that any time people are confronted by a rebel, they tend to project their own personality onto that person. Somwone who has risked it all for that moment of satisfaction, especially when a direct threat exists. Since the beginning of time, man kind has done this, from Jesus to Jesse James, although different types of rebels, the nature of man to go against the established system emboldens even the weakest of characters.

Members of Camano Island, and the greater Seattle area, especially those of you who have become frustrated by Colton, we express our deepest sympathy and wish all of you the happiest of lives.

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Colton Harris-Moore, a Washington teen who has frustrated and eluded local detectives after a string of brazen, but sometimes comical burglaries on Orcas Island, has fostered a small community on Facebook that has begun to romanticize the wayward young man.

It looks like Colton has been stirring up a lot of trouble lately. We need to recognize that this story will cause many people to have strong feelings either way. Ultimatly, as a criminal, this young thief is under the law. So what is going to happen to him. Does Colton stand a chance against the powers that be in this country?

As many of us are repulsed about this mans discretion, we cannot help but dream of doing the same things he is. In the words of Hellen Keller "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.” This life only offers so many ways to escape, many have dared to live this adventure and had their lives cut short. As an indiscriminate human, the adventurer will entertain dangerous journeys to escape into a new reality. For young Colton, his adventure involves making use of the resources of others inorder to reach his destination. Unfortunaly, this means that his story will only last so long.

This morning I opened up my local News Paper in Santa Barbara and read a cover story about the 18 year old serial-burglar/ self taught airplane pilot from Island County Washington. This young teenager, has investigators anxious to his whereabouts as he is suspected of 50 robberies in addition to stealing 3 small aircraft. Wow! I knew I needed to do something about this young Catch-Me-If you Can teenager, who has frustrated officers as he has been . One officer describing that at one moment he was there, the next he was gone.

Although Island County Sherriff Mark Brown remarks that Colton is not some young "folk Hero," Harris is going to become a modern Frank Abagnale Jr. at the rate he is going. Please check back for more details as I can gather information regarding this illusive suspect!
